Federal Skilled Trades Program — Express Entry Canada

The Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP) is Canada's Express Entry pathway for qualified tradespeople — electricians, plumbers, welders, heavy equipment operators, and other skilled trades workers who form the backbone of Canada's labour market. It has lower language requirements than the Federal Skilled Worker Program and does not require an Educational Credential Assessment, making it one of the more accessible Express Entry streams for the right candidate.

What makes the FSTP different from other Express Entry streams is also what makes it tricky. You must have either a valid job offer from a Canadian employer or a certificate of qualification from a Canadian provincial or territorial apprenticeship authority — and meeting that requirement from outside Canada is not always straightforward. Understanding exactly what qualifies, and how to position your application around these requirements, is where most FSTP applicants run into problems.

At Magellan Immigration, we assess your trades background carefully — confirming your occupation falls under an eligible NOC code, evaluating your job offer or certificate of qualification, and identifying whether a Provincial Nominee Program stream offers a faster or more reliable route to Permanent Residence than waiting for an FSTP draw.

Who Qualifies for the Federal Skilled Trades Program?

To be eligible for the FSTP, you must have:

  • At least two years of full-time (or equivalent part-time) skilled trades work experience in the past five years in an eligible TEER 2 or 3 occupation

  • A minimum language score of CLB 5 in speaking and listening, and CLB 4 in reading and writing

  • A valid job offer for full-time work in Canada for at least one year, OR a certificate of qualification in your trade issued by a Canadian provincial or territorial authority

  • No requirement for an Educational Credential Assessment

Meeting these requirements gets you into the pool — but FSTP-specific draws are less frequent than FSWP or CEC draws, making Provincial Nomination an important strategy to consider.
